Old Fashioned

The classic whiskey drink. Simple, strong, and very dependent on the bottle you use.

ClassicStrongWhiskeySpirit ForwardStirredIBA Classic
A classic Old Fashioned cocktail served in a clear lowball glass on a dark, polished wooden bar counter. The amber-colored spirit rests over a single, large square ice cube and is garnished with a wide, expressed orange peel standing upright inside the glass. The background is a softly blurred, dimly lit bar with warm golden tones from rows of liquor bottles.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Whiskey Use a bourbon or rye you actually enjoy. This drink exposes the bottle.
  • 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters Do not skip the bitters; they make the drink.
  • 1/4 oz simple syrup or 1 sugar cube Simple syrup or sugar Simple syrup is easiest. A sugar cube is traditional but takes more stirring.

How to make it

  1. Add simple syrup or sugar and bitters to a rocks glass.
  2. Add whiskey.
  3. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, or until the syrup and bitters are fully mixed.
  4. Add one large ice cube.
  5. Stir for 15–20 seconds and garnish with orange peel if you have one.
